I have recently started my own home business to supplement my day job so this book by Rico Nelson was of more than academic interest, but something that was very much top of mind. I found this an amazing resource. It does go into the details (taxes, financing) which I would have expected but there were a couple of areas of emphasis that I found mind-opening. One was the emphasis on competitiveness (or as the author puts it, kicking them in the a**). One associates competitive warfare with large corporations, but the author is right that every business, big or small, is competing for customers and business, and his tips on the matter were really helpful. Also what I liked were the fact that he did not offer any quick fixes. Any business is a long, hard slog and what such a book can at best promise is the basic `boot camp’ on fundamentals- the rest has to be won by hard work and sweat. The author acknowledges that upfront and also says transparently that trial and error will be one of the biggest learning experiences for any small business. That candor makes this book even better in my eyes, and I’ll be sure to try and implement at least some of it’s points as my own business moves forward.
